What Is Simvastatin?
As the latter half of its name suggests, simvastatin is a statin drug—the most common type of medication for lowering cholesterol. It’s taken orally to reduce high levels of lipids and triglycerides (“bad” cholesterol) in the blood while elevating “good” cholesterol levels. Simvastatin is commonly prescribed along with a diet and exercise regimen to improve the patient’s overall health, but it can also be used to reduce the risk of heart complications in patients with diabetes and heart disease.
Simvastatin is not recommended for children under 10 or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding—there is evidence that simvastatin has a negative effect on developing babies. Patients taking simvastatin should not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice, since the interactions may have harmful effects.
Only use simvastatin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Be sure to let your doctor know about other medications you’re taking and any medical conditions you have, particularly those that affect the liver or kidneys—some patients need to take a lower than average dose of simvastatin to avoid kidney problems.
What Is the Brand Version of Simvastatin?
Simvastatin is the generic equivalent of the brand-name medication Zocor. The pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. introduced simvastatin to the market in the late 1980s, holding the patent on Zocor until 2006. When Zocor’s patent expired, many generic versions of simvastatin became available, drastically reducing the cost of simvastatin and other statin drugs.
Though it may not have the same name recognition as Zocor, generic simvastatin is just as safe and effective.
