Simvastatin is the generic name for Zocor, which has been commercially available since the late 1980s. When the multinational pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. lost patent protection for Zocor in 2006, generic simvastatin became more widely available, significantly reducing the price of Zocor, its generic equivalents, and statin drugs (lipid-lowering medications) in general. What Is Zocor?
Zocor is a statin drug, which is the most commonly prescribed type of medication for lowering cholesterol. It works by reducing elevated levels of “bad” cholesterol, like lipids and triglycerides, in the blood while causing “good” cholesterol to increase. In most cases, Zocor is prescribed to improve the patient’s overall health as a supplement to a diet and exercise routine. Patients with diabetes and coronary heart disease may also take Zocor to reduce their risk of strokes and heart attacks.
Zocor and generic simvastatin should not be taken by children under 10 or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, since it may have harmful effects on developing babies.
