Metformin (Generic Riomet, Glucophage, Glumetza, Glucophage XR, Fortamet)

Medically reviewed by Courtney Sullens, Pharm.D., RPh, Pharmacist-in-Charge.

Metformin is a generic drug that is sometimes sold under the brand name Riomet. Typically prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes, it can also be used to treat polycystic ovary syndrome and pediatric polycystic ovary syndrome. Additionally, metformin can also be used in the treatment of liver or renal diseases. However, close monitoring is required such as eGFR<30 is contraindicated for kidney function. It doesn't appear to cause or exacerbate liver injury and, indeed, is often beneficial in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

If you don’t want to pay the full, exaggerated price for a Riomet prescription, ScriptCo is where to buy metformin at a discount. Members are able to purchase metformin cheap and have it shipped to a convenient location, saving both time and money. ScriptCo will always get you the best metformin price possible.

Metformin Prices

The cost of metformin varies depending on the quantity of tablets in your prescription and the strength of each dose (ranging from 500 mg to 1,000 mg). Your specific insurance coverage will also be a factor in the price of your metformin. No matter what, though, generic metformin costs significantly less than the brand-name equivalent, Riomet.

For those with no insurance coverage, the average cost of generic metformin can be $4 a pill. However, with ScriptCo’s incredible savings, you can get your metformin prescriptions up to 99% off the retail price. With ScriptCo, you’ll always pay the true at-cost pricing, which is the same cost a pharmacy buys medication for without retail markup. About Metformin

What Is Metformin?

Metformin falls under the biguanide class of drugs, meaning it works by preventing the production of glucose in the liver. It is taken orally, in liquid or tablet form, to help improve the body’s sensitivity toward insulin and reduce the amount of sugar absorbed by the intestines. For those with polycystic ovary syndrome, insulin resistance is a common problem, so metformin may be used to correct that effect.

Metformin is generally a very tolerable drug, but it should not be used if you have liver disease. Using metformin while pregnant is safe in the short term—however, there is currently no data on its long-term safety, so pregnant women should consult their doctors before taking this medication. If you have a prescription for insulin, metformin may decrease the amount you need to take, so make sure to ask your doctor about the interaction between the two.

Use your metformin exactly as prescribed by your physician. Let your doctor know about any other medications you’re taking, especially insulin, and any other medical conditions that you may have. If you have liver or kidney disease, it is extremely important to relay this information to your doctor before taking metformin.

What Is the Brand-Name Version of Generic Metformin?

There are several popular name brands that are equivalent to generic metformin. Riomet, Glucophage, Glumetza, Glucophage XR, and Fortamet are some of the most common you’ll find. Metformin has been available in France since 1957 and received FDA approval for use in the U.S. in 1995. In 2018, it was the fourth-most commonly prescribed medication in the U.S.

Even though it doesn’t have the same recognition as some of the brand-name competitors, generic metformin is equally safe and effective. Since generic medications are held to the same FDA standards as brand-name drugs, they cannot enter the market until those standards are fully met. If you still have concerns about taking generic metformin, ask your doctor.
