What Is Montelukast?
When the body is having an allergic reaction, it produces something called leukotrienes, which cause inflammation of the airways. This inflammation makes it difficult to breathe, often resulting in the need to use a quick-relief inhaler. Montelukast is a generic drug that blocks leukotrienes, allowing for easier breathing during allergic reactions and exercise.
If you experience wheezing, difficulty breathing, tightness in your chest, or coughing caused by allergies, asthma, or exercising, montelukast may work for you. It’s generally taken by tablet once a day, unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor. Common side effects may include abdominal pain, headaches, and coughing. Keep in mind that montelukast is not a replacement for an inhaler and cannot treat an acute asthma attack.
