What Is the Generic Equivalent of Norvasc?
Amlodipine besylate is the generic name for Norvasc. Pfizer first patented the drug amlodipine in 1982, then marketed it as a medication under the brand name Norvasc in 1990. Once Pfizer lost its patent in 2007, amlodipine became more widely available as a generic Norvasc alternative. Amlodipine is now considered by the World Health Organization to be an “essential drug” for treating high blood pressure.
Amlodipine besylate and Norvasc have a salt additive (besylate) added to the amlodipine to help the body take it in. Amlodipine besylate is shown to be safe to use in patients experiencing hypertension (high blood pressure) or chronic stable angina (predictable chest pain due to decreased oxygen uptake by the heart). Amlodipine besylate works by relaxing blood vessels to lower blood pressure, and it can facilitate blood and oxygen flow through blood systems, thereby relieving pain or discomfort caused by stable angina. Amlodipine besylate has shown to be safe and effective in reducing cardiovascular events by lowering blood pressure.
What Is Norvasc?
Norvasc is used by patients with hypertension (high blood pressure) or patients suffering from coronary artery disease (including but not limited to chronic stable angina). Norvasc can be used alone or in conjunction with other prescribed medications, or as part of a comprehensive risk management plan to help treat hypertension.
Take Norvasc and generic amlodipine besylate only as prescribed by your doctor. Patients who have liver problems or congestive heart failure, who are pregnant, or who have allergies to this medication should speak with their doctor before use. Contact your doctor if you notice swelling of your feet or ankles, difficulty breathing, an irregular heartbeat, or tightness in your chest.
