Medically reviewed by Hanna Kim, PharmD, RPh, B.S., Staff Pharmacist.

Protonix is an oral medication used to treat conditions that result from having too much stomach acid, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, corrosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Protonix relieves these conditions by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach and is even believed to help prevent esophageal cancer.
The generic name for Protonix is pantoprazole, which is equally successful at treating excess stomach acid and comes at a lower price. With a ScriptCo membership, consumers can pay wholesale prices for generic Protonix, reducing the cost of their medication by as much as 99%.
Protonix Prices
Without insurance coverage, consumers can expect to pay an out-of-pocket average of about $640 for a yearly supply of Protonix. This steep price reflects a retail markup as well as the premium on market recognition that comes with brand-name drugs.
With a ScriptCo membership, patients will pay the same wholesale prices for the generic equivalent of Protonix that retail pharmacies pay before marking it up for the consumer. Your prescription may cost up to 99% less with ScriptCo’s Protonix discount than it would at a traditional pharmacy. About Protonix
What Is the Generic Equivalent of Protonix?
The generic name for Protonix is pantoprazole. Pantoprazole was developed in 1985 by chemists at Byk Gulden, a subsidiary of the pharmaceutical company Altana. The FDA approved the brand-name version, Protonix, in the United States market in the year 2000. The Protonix patent officially expired in 2011, making the generic Protonix equivalent readily available for commercial sale and drastically reducing the cost of this medication across the country.
What Is Protonix?
Protonix belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Some health conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome cause an overproduction of stomach acid. Proton pump inhibitors work to prevent stomach cells from secreting a superfluous amount of acid, which gives areas such as the stomach lining or the esophagus that have been irritated by stomach acid a chance to heal.
Among the side effects of Protonix are headaches, drowsiness, joint pain, and stomach pain. Some rare but potentially more serious side effects include muscle pain, water retention, and heart arrhythmias. Taking high doses of Protonix and/or using it for more than a year isn’t recommended, since it can increase the risk of osteoporosis. If taken for longer than a year, Protonix can also elevate one’s risk of a C-diff infection, which can be particularly dangerous for the elderly or people with immunodeficiencies.
Pantoprazole, generic Protonix, is just as effective and safe for consumption as its more widely known equivalent. The only significant difference is the price discrepancy, so consumers are better off cutting costs by going with the generic version.
