The generic name for Revatio is sildenafil citrate. Sildenafil citrate has been FDA-approved in the United States since 1998, when it became available on the market as the country’s first oral treatment for erectile dysfunction. Since then, Revatio and other brand-name equivalents of sildenafil citrate have become wildly popular around the world.
In addition to erectile dysfunction, sildenafil citrate is used to treat what’s called pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). If you experience shortness of breath, a tightness in your chest, dizziness, or fatigue while exercising, it’s possible that you’re suffering from PAH. Sildenafil citrate helps alleviate the symptoms of PAH by relaxing the blood vessels to increase the flow of blood to your lungs.
What Is Revatio?
Revatio is the brand-name equivalent of generic sildenafil citrate. The name Revatio may be more recognizable than sildenafil citrate, but both of these drugs are FDA-approved to treat PAH in the United States, and they are equally safe and effective. The main difference between Revatio and its generic equivalent is the price for generic Revatio is much lower.
Although both Viagra and Revatio contain the same ingredient (sildenafil) and are both owned by Pfizer, Revatio is marketed and prescribed as a treatment for PAH, while Viagra is prescribed at a different strength and dosage and marketed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. That said, Revatio can also be prescribed as a treatment for mild erectile dysfunction symptoms.
Common side effects for Revatio include, but are not limited to, muscle pain, diarrhea, tingling in the hands or feet, and an increased body temperature. More serious side effects may include heart attack, painful or long-lasting erections, and changes in vision or hearing. Consult your doctor if you experience these serious side effects.
