Glucophage (Brand Name Equivalent of Generic Metrformin)

Medically reviewed by Hanna Kim, PharmD, RPh, B.S., Staff Pharmacist.

Glucophage, or metformin hydrochloride (the generic name for Glucophage) is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to control high blood sugar for adults and children 10 years and above with type 2 diabetes.

Compared to its generic counterparts, Glucophage costs are high. However, with ScriptCo, the cost of generic Glucophage is significantly reduced. Rather than paying a premium for a brand name, become a ScriptCo member and order generic Glucophage equivalents for low prices.

Glucophage Prices

While there are varying prices for different dosages and quantities of metformin tablets, brand-name Glucophage typically has higher prices than its generic counterpart. Insurance coverage can also affect the price you pay for the Glucophage. Without insurance, and depending on your prescription, Glucophage can be 50% to 300% more expensive than the generic drug.

ScriptCo’s generic Glucophage discount saves our members thousands of dollars each year. With ScriptCo’s generic Glucophage discount, you can get the same type of medication for up to 99% off retail Glucophage’s cost. With ScriptCo, you’ll always pay the true at-cost pricing, which is the same cost a pharmacy buys generic medication for without retail markup. About Glucophage

What Is the Generic Equivalent of Glucophage?

The generic name for Glucophage is metformin hydrochloride. In 1995, the US Food and Drug Administration approved metformin as a blood sugar lowering medication, and Bristol-Myers Squibb acquired marketing rights for Glucophage that same year. Generic metformin became more widely available in 2002. In 2011, the World Health Organization recognized metformin as an “essential drug,” and it went on to become the fourth-most commonly prescribed drug as of 2018.

Metformin is considered a first response therapy in treating type 2 diabetes. It’s safe to use and has shown its effectiveness in controlling blood glucose levels when used in conjunction with diet and exercise. Metformin does not increase the insulin concentration in the body—it acts by enhancing the effects of insulin and its uptake in the tissue systems. Long-term usage of metformin has also shown a reduction in cardiovascular events and improved survival in type 2 diabetes patients.

What Is Glucophage?

Glucophage is a drug that controls blood sugar levels. It acts on the body’s sensitivity to insulin and glucose absorption to help control blood glucose levels. Glucophage is prescribed for patients with type 2 diabetes or those who are considered prediabetic. Although Glucophage can be used in conjunction with insulin or other medications, it is not used for treating patients with type 1 diabetes.

Take Glucophage or the generic equivalent, metformin hydrochloride, only as prescribed by your doctor. Dosage recommendations vary based on each patient’s medical conditions, treatment response, or other medications. Glucophage lowers blood sugar, so avoid alcohol consumption when taking this medication since it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis. If you experience trouble breathing, stomach pain, unusual muscle aches, dizziness, or shortness of breath, contact your doctor. Do not take Glucophage or generic metformin if you have severe kidney disease, metabolic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis.

What’s the Difference between Brand-Name and Generic Glucophage?

Glucophage costs much more than generic medications, and insurance typically does not cover it. Both brand-name Glucophage and the generic equivalent metformin are FDA-approved and are considered to be safe and effective treatments for patients with type 2 diabetes or prediabetics.
