What Is the Generic Equivalent of Prinivil?
In 1988, the pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck & Co. began marketing and selling lisinopril under the brand name Prinivil. Once Merck lost its patent in the early 2000s, lisinopril became widely available as Prinivil’s generic equivalent. Since the difference between the two drugs is predominantly a matter of marketing, patients should feel encouraged to use the generic substitution for Prinivil to save on unnecessarily marked up prices.
What Is Prinivil?
Prinivil is used to treat high blood pressure. It’s also often prescribed to prevent the complications that can occur from prolonged high blood pressure, such as strokes or heart attacks. If a patient has already had a heart attack, Prinivil can help them recover by increasing the flow of blood to organs that may have been affected, like the brain, kidneys, or heart.
Prinivil is a member of a class of drugs called ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors. The ACE enzyme is responsible for narrowing blood vessels, which causes high blood pressure. Prinivil treats high blood pressure by inhibiting this enzyme.
Most Prinivil patients take it once a day, but you should follow your doctor’s instructions. There is a long list of medications that should not be taken in tandem with Prinivil, so be sure to discuss your other prescriptions with your physician. Since Prinivil lowers a patient’s blood pressure, it is often associated with an increase in dizziness, tiredness, or headaches. It also has the potential to harm the kidney, so the patient’s kidney function needs to be monitored while taking the medication.
What’s the Difference Between Brand-Name and Generic Prinivil?
The only significant difference between brand-name Prinivil and generic lisinopril is a matter of brand ownership and marketing. Because Merck helped to fund the development of lisinopril, it owned the drug’s patent from 1987 until the early 2000s. Once this patent expired, generic Prinivil equivalents could be mass-produced and sold for lower prices.
There is no medical disadvantage to taking lisinopril instead of Prinivil. Both generic and brand-name medications are obligated to meet FDA standards before doctors can prescribe them, and they’re equally safe and effective.
