What Is Lisinopril?
Lisinopril is used most often to treat hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. It is a member of the ACE inhibitor family, where “ACE” means angiotensin converting enzyme. Considered an antihypertensive drug, lisinopril is prescribed to those with repeatedly elevated blood pressure. It works by interacting with the enzymes that tighten blood vessels so that blood flows more smoothly throughout the body. Along with lisinopril, a doctor may advise a diet that is low in salt and fat and 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week. Lisinopril may also help treat heart failure and improve the patient’s survival after a heart attack.
Lisinopril is not recommended for children under six. Additionally, lisinopril is prohibited for pregnancy and its use should be discontinued as soon as a pregnancy is detected. Only use it as prescribed by your doctor. Prinivil is the brand-name version of the generic drug lisinopril. Lisinopril was patented in 1978 and was approved for use in the United States in 1987.
