What Is Metformin?
Metformin falls under the biguanide class of drugs, meaning it works by preventing the production of glucose in the liver. It is taken orally, in liquid or tablet form, to help improve the body’s sensitivity toward insulin and reduce the amount of sugar absorbed by the intestines. For those with polycystic ovary syndrome, insulin resistance is a common problem, so metformin may be used to correct that effect.
Metformin is generally a very tolerable drug, but it should not be used if you have liver disease. Using metformin while pregnant is safe in the short term—however, there is currently no data on its long-term safety, so pregnant women should consult their doctors before taking this medication. If you have a prescription for insulin, metformin may decrease the amount you need to take, so make sure to ask your doctor about the interaction between the two.
Use your metformin exactly as prescribed by your physician. Let your doctor know about any other medications you’re taking, especially insulin, and any other medical conditions that you may have. If you have liver or kidney disease, it is extremely important to relay this information to your doctor before taking metformin.
What Is the Brand-Name Version of Generic Metformin?
There are several popular name brands that are equivalent to generic metformin. Riomet, Glucophage, Glumetza, Glucophage XR, and Fortamet are some of the most common you’ll find. Metformin has been available in France since 1957 and received FDA approval for use in the U.S. in 1995. In 2018, it was the fourth-most commonly prescribed medication in the U.S.
